LAND ROVER AND CHASSIS/VIN NUMBERS.


80-inch Models


The chassis number can be found on the engine mounting side and on the brass plate on the bulkhead side. Later vehicles had the plate positioned inside the cabin.  

86 and 107 Models

The chassis number can be found on the bulkhead inside the vehicle and on the right-hand side ahead of the first lever.  
*Note*: We have received a report of an 86" model with the chassis number on the left rear and none at the front. Check both locations.  

88 and 109 Models

The chassis number can be found on the bulkhead inside the vehicle and on the right-hand side ahead of the first lever.  

Series III 109" V8 (Stage I)

The chassis number can be found on the bulkhead in the engine bay and on the right-hand side ahead of the first lever.  

Defender Models (90, 110, 130

Located on the left rear front windscreen corner. Stamped on the plate atop the brake pedal box in the engine compartment. Stamped on the right-hand side of the transmission mounting.  

Range Rover

Found on the left behind the front windscreen corner. Stamped on the right-hand side of the transmission mounting.  
*Range Rover Classic Vogue* (NAS County uncertain) has the chassis number sealed on the rear passenger side (ahead of the rear wheel).  

Discovery

Located on the left behind the front windscreen corner. Stamped on the right front of the transmission mounting.

CHASSIS NUMBERING SYSTEM SYNOPSIS

**948–1949

Prefixed by **L** or **R** (indicating left/right-hand drive), followed by six or seven digits.  
- First digit = year: **8** = 1948–1949.  
- Second digit = type: **6** = Land Rover.  
- Third digit (seven-digit numbers only) = model type: **6** = Basic, **7** = Station Wagon, **8** = Welder.  
- Final four digits = serial number (starting at 0001), except Series 866 (starting at 3001).  

*1950–1953

Prefixed by **L** or **R** (1950 models only), eight digits.  
- First digit = year: **0** = 1950, **1** = 1951, **2** = 1952, **3** = 1953.  
- Second digit = type: **6** = Land Rover.  
- Third digit = model: **1** = Basic, **2** = Station Wagon, **3** = Welder, **6** = CKD (Completely Knocked Down).  
- Fourth digit (post-1950) = destination: **0** = Home Market, **3** = LHD Export, **6** = RHD Export.  
- Final four digits = serial number (starting at 0001).  

*1954–1955

Eight-digit system.  
- First digit = year: **4** = 1954, **5** = 1955.  
- Second digit = type: **7** = Land Rover.  
- Third digit = model: **1** = 86", **2** = 107", **6/7** = CKD.  
- Fourth digit = destination: **0/1** = Home Market, **3/4** = LHD Export, **6/7** = RHD Export.  
- Final four digits = serial number (starting at 0001).  

*1955 (Nine-digit system)

- First digit = type: **1** = Land Rover.  
- Second digit = model: **7** = Land Rover.  
- Third digit = destination: **0** = Home Market, **3** = LHD Export, **4** = LHD CKD, **6** = RHD Export, **7** = RHD CKD.  
- Fourth digit = service period: **6** = Late 1955.  
- Final five digits = serial number (starting at 00001).  

*1956–1961

Nine-digit system.  
- First digit = **1**.  
- Second/third digits = model range: **11–35** = Series I, **41–71** = Series II.  
- Fourth digit = year: **6** = 1956, **7** = 1957, **8** = 1958, **9** = 1959, **0** = 1960, **1** = 1961.  
- Final five digits = serial number (starting at 00001).  

*1962–1979

Eight-digit system with suffix letters.  
- First three digits = model: **241–258, 260–324** = Series IIA 88"/109", **325–339** = Series IIB (110" Forward Control), **340–354** = Series IIA 109", **5424** = Series II 88" Station Wagon (US), **259, 901–950** = Series III, **951–955, 895** = Lightweight, **956–965** = 101" Forward Control, **355, 356, 358** = Range Rover.  
- Final five digits = serial number. Suffix letters denote design modifications.  

*1980–Present (Global, excluding USA)

Conventional 17-digit VIN.  
- **Digits 1–3**: **SAL** = Europe/UK/Land Rover.  
- **Digits 4–5**: Model (e.g., **LB** = Series III, **LD** = Defender 90/110, **LH** = Range Rover Classic).  
- **Digit 6**: Wheelbase (e.g., **A** = 88", **C** = 109", **R** = 110").  
- **Digit 7**: Body type (e.g., **A** = Truck Cab, **M** = 5-door Station Wagon).  
- **Digit 8**: Engine (e.g., **B** = 2.5L Turbo Diesel, **V** = 3.5L V8).  
- **Digit 9**: Transmission (e.g., **1** = RHD 4-speed).  
- **Digit 10**: Model year (e.g., **A** = 1983–1984, **W** = 1999).  
- **Digit 11**: Assembly plant (e.g., **A** = Solihull).  
- **Digits 12–17**: Serial number.  

*USA VINs (1987–Present)

- **Digits 1–3**: **SAL** = UK/Land Rover.  
- **Digit 4**: Model (e.g., **D** = Defender 90/110, **H** = Range Rover Classic).  
- **Digit 5**: Emissions/wheelbase (e.g., **C** = LWB Range Rover).  
- **Digit 6**: Body type (e.g., **1** = 5-door Hard Top).  
- **Digit 7**: Engine (e.g., **1** = 3.5L V8).  
- **Digit 8**: Transmission/GVW (e.g., **8** = LHD 5-speed).  
- **Digit 9**: Checksum (calculated via SAE formula).  
- **Digit 10**: Model year (e.g., **T** = 1996).  
- **Digit 11**: Assembly plant.  
- **Digits 12–17**: Serial number.
