If you own a Land Rover Series, a Defender, a Toyota 40 Series or any classic over 30 years old, you already know what we're talking about: that brake pedal with the travel of an oil press, that vacuum servo that barely assists when the engine is off idle, and that "I'll get there… eventually" feeling every time you pull up at a downhill stop sign.
The good news is we didn't invent the solution. Bosch did, and it's fitted as standard on the Tesla Model 3 and Y, the Honda CR-V, the Porsche Taycan, the Audi e-tron and half the modern car industry. It's called the iBooster, and in its second generation (Gen 2) it is, by far, the best braking upgrade you can make to a classic.
What exactly is the iBooster Gen 2?
The iBooster is an electromechanical brake booster it replaces the old-school vacuum servo with a system made up of a pedal travel sensor, an integrated control unit (ECU) and an electric motor with a three-stage gearbox that pushes the master cylinder.
When you press the pedal, the sensor reads your braking demand, the ECU calculates the required assistance and the motor supplies the force. No intake manifold vacuum, no diaphragms, no vacuum pump, no ageing check valves.
The advantages over a conventional vacuum booster are massive:
- Total engine independence. Doesn't matter if you run a low-vacuum diesel, a petrol engine with a wild cam, a turbo or an EV conversion: assistance is always the same, even with the engine off
- Much faster response.Brake pressure builds almost instantly; the system reacts up to three times faster than a vacuum booster. In an emergency stop, that's metres.
- Firm pedal. No more of that spongy feel from old diaphragms: progressive, consistent assistance on every press.
- Standalone fail-safe mode. And here's the key for classics: the iBooster works in standalone mode with no CAN bus and no communication with any other ECU. It only needs battery power, ignition-switched power and ground. And if the electronics ever failed, the brakes keep working purely mechanically, like a car with no servo at all. Exactly the same safety you have today — but with modern assistance.
As Tulay's Wire Werks, specialists in wiring for these units, put it: "the iBooster can work in standalone fail-safe mode without any other connection besides power and chassis ground… great for EV conversions, classic cars, muscle cars and hot rods, engines with low vacuum like diesel or turbo, or lack of space in engine swaps".
Where does an iBooster Gen 2 come from?
Bosch fits this unit as standard in dozens of models: Tesla Model 3/Y, Honda CR-V and Accord, Renault Zoe, Peugeot 3008, Porsche Taycan, Toyota Yaris Hybrid… The builder community has spent years documenting donor vehicles and their quirks — the iBooster Electric Brake Booster" thread on irate4x4]keeps the reference list, and the Dutch site EVCreatepublishes the most complete installation guide out there, with flange dimensions, compatible reservoirs and wiring diagrams.
Real cases: people already fitting them to their classics (and talking about it)
This isn't theory. There's an entire community fitting iBoosters to classics, with documented results:
Land Rover Series. Jaunt Electric conversions, from Australia, who makes amazing cars, is using this units.
- Air-cooled Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2.** On [yourspec.com *the pedal was hard and required a lot of travel to firm up… stop and go traffic was a leg workout"*.With the iBooster, full assistance even with the engine off, silently and without any pedal feedback.
- Jeep CJ-8 (EV conversion).** On the [cj-8.com forum, one user sums up his Gen 2 Tesla swap: "It's dead silent, draws next to nothing at idle and less than 10 A under normal braking. I can lock up the brakes. With it powered off the pedal is rock hard" — the best possible demo of the fail-safe mode.
-Toyota Tacoma 4x4.** The giant [irate4x4 thread]covers installs on Tacomas, Sequoias running one-ton axles and competition buggies, with deep technical discussion on pedal ratios and master cylinders.
-DeLorean DMC-12.** The ["General Bosch iBooster Retrofit" thread on DMCTalkis probably the most documented classic-car install in the world: 3D-printed brackets, adapted pushrods, and the community's verdict — *That is a thing of beauty"
Commercial kits in the USA.
The movement is so big that dedicated companies now exist: Retrofit Innovationssells vehicle-specific kits for muscle cars and trucks (*if you can install a vacuum booster, you can install this: battery power, ignition power and ground"), and Classic Performance Products (CPP)launched its E-Booster based on the iBooster Gen 2 for classic GM A-Body, F-Body and X-Body cars.
You've read the threads above, you'll have spotted the pattern: every DIY install means finding the right donor unit, fabricating a custom firewall bracket, adapting the pushrod (metric to imperial or vice versa), sourcing Bosch's proprietary connectors, sorting out the fluid reservoir, and — the mother of all headaches — adapting the brake lines, because every country and era uses a different thread: M10x1 with ISO bubble flare in Europe, M10x1 with SAE 45° flare in Japan, 3/8"-24 UNF in North America, M12x1 on some models… It's exactly the kind of project that turns an afternoon in the garageinto three months of eBay orders.
The Señor Barbo solution: BOOSTERS
At Señor Barbo we've done all that work for you. Our BOOSTERS line starts from the Bosch iBooster Gen 2 — remanufactured and bench-tested, sourced from the Honda / Tesla CR-V — and turns it into a complete, vehicle-specific kit that installs in under an hourwith normal workshop tools.
Every kit includes:
We've developed and validated the solution on our own development fleet: Land Rover Series and Defender (including the fitting variants of Range Rover Classic, Discovery and TD5),
The result: the braking of a 2025 car in the classic of your life. Firm pedal, full assistance with the engine off, instant response, and the same mechanical safety as always if anything fails. And reversible: if you ever want to go back to the original booster, it comes off the way it went on.
Modernizing your classic's brakes is no longer a months-long project. It's one hour of your time.
